Takata Airbag Recall

Defective Airbags May Harm Passengers with Exploding Metal Fragments

An initial recall of defective passenger-side airbags in cars driven in warm regions was issued in 2013. As of November, 2014 more vehicles with defective airbags designed by the Takata Corporation have been added to a massive, nationwide recall that now includes driver-side airbags, regardless of geographic region. This includes up to 7.8 million vehicles made between 2000 and 2008 by ten car makers: BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Toyota. See below for a full list of affected vehicles.

Potential for Injury

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documentation, faulty air bag inflators can deploy explosively, rupturing components within and harming the vehicle’s occupants. NHTSA describes the consequences of such a deployment: “In the event of a crash resulting in a deployment of the passenger’s air bag, the inflator could rupture, with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the passenger seat occupant or other occupants.

According to Consumer Reports, there have been four deaths and more than 100 injuries linked to the Takata airbag recall. They write that “in some cases the incidents were horrific, with metal shards penetrating a driver’s face and neck.”

As a result, consumers are being advised by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration to take the defective airbag into a dealership immediately for service. The defective airbag affects millions of cars, and yet, the total scope of the defective product is still unknown. In order to prevent this defect from claiming any more lives or causing more damage, we recommend following all recall orders and promptly returning a defective vehicle to the dealership for immediate servicing.
