What is fracking?

Hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” is the process by which energy companies extract or pull natural gas from deep beneath the earth’s surface. During fracking, water and a mixture of chemicals are forced under great pressure deep into layers of rock found thousands of feet below the surface of the ground. This water fractures shale and causes natural gas that is trapped in the shale to be released. The contaminated water is then pumped back to the surface and trucked away to disposal sites, while the natural gas is collected and eventually sold.
